Interview

Q: What got you into refereeing?

A: I had an injury that stopped me from playing, but I still had a strong desire to be involved in rugby and be on the field. I had refereed my kids’ junior games and found that I really enjoyed it. After my injury, I got in contact with Canterbury Rugby Referees and went along to my first meeting, met the team, and I haven’t looked back since.

Q: What do you enjoy most about refereeing?

A: I enjoy the challenge of managing a game and making decisions under pressure. I also enjoy the camaraderie within the refereeing team and the opportunity to continue learning and developing each week.

Q: What’s one law you wish more players understood?

A: One law I wish more players understood is the tackle and ruck law, especially around releasing and rolling away. Players often don’t realise how important it is to release the ball carrier and move away quickly to allow fair contest at the breakdown. When everyone understands this better, the game flows more smoothly and there is less frustration for both players and referees.
