Will Todd
Premier 1 Referee
Interview
Q: What got you into refereeing?
A: I was playing in one of the lower sections of the U15 grade, but even at that level, I was increasingly finding that I was too small and too slow to compete with those around me. I have always loved rugby, and in refereeing I saw an opportunity to be involved in rugby at a much higher level than I ever could have played.
Q: What is your most memorable refereeing achievement?
A: A couple of years ago, I refereed Japan U20 vs New Zealand Universities. The speed of the game, and the skill of the players, was incredible. I spent the first 15 minutes hanging on for dear life, but after that I adjusted to the pace and really enjoyed the game.
Q: What is one thing that you would say to someone who is thinking of becoming a referee?
A: There is an incredibly supportive community of referees. It might seem from the outside as a solo pursuit, but in reality, there are always people around to support you and provide feedback to enable you to take your refereeing wherever you want.
